Ex-president and active member of Confederación Nacional de Comunidades del Perú Afectadas por la Minería (CONACAMI) [National Confederation of Peruvian Communities Affected by Mining]. CONACAMI represents ancestral indigenous communities who build economic, social and environmental justices as peoples with collective rights against the abuses of transnational companies extractive economic and political activities, nationally and globally. In different parts of the country we have organized as Coordinadoras Regionales de Comunidades Afectas por la Minería (CORECAMIs) [Regional Coordinators of Communities Affected by Mining], Federaciones de Comunidades Provinciales, Departamentales y Regionales [Federation of Provincial, Departmental and Regional Communities], as well as Frentes de Defensa [Defense Fronts] and Centrales de Rondas Campesinas [¿?].
Resistance and organization of those affected by mining began in 1997 and 1998, in the midst of the Fujimori dictatorship and its imposition of savage neoliberalism, the destruction of social organizations, privatization and the growth of transnational companies in the lands and territories of the communities. The organizing process had its peak in October 1999 with the founding of the CONACAMI. Part of that history is told in the Confederation’s publications.
